Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Embassy’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) hosted a three-day conference in Iquitos to enhance cross-border collaboration against human trafficking in the region with Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.
Five HSI trainers specializing in human trafficking and sex tourism participated in the conference along with members of the Police and prosecutors from Peru, Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador.
“HSI is dedicated to the global fight against human trafficking. Our goal is to disrupt and dismantle transnational criminal organizations that profit from exploiting the most vulnerable,” said HSI Attaché in Peru, Paul Salamon.
“Behind every statistic there is a face, a name and a story. Every victim of trafficking is a person with dreams, hopes and aspirations. Our duty is not only to rescue and protect these people, but also to restore their dignity, heal their wounds and empower them to rebuild their lives,” said INL Director Glenn Tosten.
The conference concluded with an agreement to make it an annual event to strengthen the fight against human trafficking through continued international cooperation.
