“Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Geneva”: Italy asks for sanctions to be extended

Economy Minister Giorgetti has asked all G20 countries to apply the same sanctions introduced by G7 nations against Russia

Peace negotiations on the crisis in Ukraine are said to be underway in Geneva: this was announced by the Swiss Foreign Minister, Ignazio Cassis. According to Cassis, the negotiations are taking place in a climate of “maximum discretion” even if “they are not currently taking place at the highest levels”. “We always offer our good services, but it remains to be seen what both sides, both Russia and Ukraine, will do with it.” Cassis added that Russia has publicly declared that it no longer considers Switzerland a neutral country and recalled that Ukraine had asked Switzerland to represent its interests in Russia, but that this request was rejected in Moscow. “The Russian narrative is well known: he said Switzerland has lost its neutrality,

The news comes as Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti called on all G20 countries to apply the same sanctions introduced by G7 nations against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. “The sanctions ‘must be applied not only by the G7 countries, but also by the G20 countries,” Giorgetti said in a statement released on the sidelines of a summit of G20 financial leaders in Bengaluru. “Otherwise Russia bypasses the system sanctions and the effects are likely to be lower than our expectations”, added the minister.

The debate on the effective effectiveness of the sanctions is always current also due to the many news stories that speak of how some companies have managed to circumvent the restrictions. Today, the tenth package of sanctions imposed by Europe and agreed with the United States, Great Britain, Australia and Japan is also in the pipeline.

Kiev allegedly made a detailed inventory of all components imported by Russia from Western countries which are then used in Moscow’s armed systems. Among the European companies involved, he underlined, there are companies based in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. Many others are based in the US and some components also come from Taiwan. Also asked the EU to do more on the stop to visas for Russians.
