U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (NJ), Tim Kaine (VA), Bill Hagerty (TN) and Congressman Tony Cardenas (CA) will visit Uruguay from April 5-7 as part of a regional tour that also includes Chile and Brazil. Senator Bob Menendez, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is leading the delegation. In Montevideo, the legislators will hold meetings with members of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Uruguay, led by Ambassador Heide B. Fulton, who presented her credentials to Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou on March 22. They will also meet with representatives of Uruguay’s business and entrepreneurial sector.
On Thursday, the delegation will be received by the President of Uruguay at the Presidential Estancia de Anchorena, in the Department of Colonia, where they will enjoy a typical Uruguayan barbecue with the President of Uruguay, Uruguay’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Francisco Bustillo and Uruguay’s Ambassador in the United States Andrés Duran.
The purpose of the visit to Uruguay is to discuss with the highest government authorities the state of bilateral relations and the economy. It is also expected to be part of the agenda to assess the state of democratic values in the region and to highlight Uruguay’s role as an example of stability and democracy in the hemisphere. The U.S. Congressional delegation is making this tour of Latin American countries to speak with allies about how to strength cooperation in key areas for the development of the peoples of the Americas, such as education, economic prosperity, citizen security and combating climate change.
